Though our 4th of July BBQ started already on 3 July at 5 pm, it did turn out to be an Independence day-inspired event with our German friends and neighbors under the stars-and-stripes flag.
We had Kir for starters....

fought some rain showers afterwards, but nevertheless continued grilling genuine American HAMBURGERS...

and threw in quite a few German Weissbier and Augustiner Edelstoff.

Later on the weather improved....

and Christel Schaich was in the mood for presenting some of her famous Flee-market jokes.
The party continued until after midnight!

6 km Illerlauf in Voehringen

Beim gestern erst zum 2. Mal ausgetragenen Illerlauf herrschte Dauerregen - wie den ganzen Juni schon! Es wurden Halbmarathon, 10 km, 6 km und 10 km Nordic Walking Rennen ausgetragen, Petra Gerhard nach 6km in 42 min als Vierte ins Ziel - natuerlich als aelteste Teilnehmerin. Die meisten Laeufer hatten sich fuer den Halbmarathon und die 10 km Strecke eingetragen, fuer die 6km waren es nur etwa 8 Teilnehmer.

Auf der Insel Reichenau im Bodensee

Die Insel Reichenau ist ein Juwel im Bodensee! Sie ist seit dem Jahr 2000 als Ganzes auf der UNESCO Liste als Welt Kulturerbe geschuetzt.
Am 17. Juni haben wir eine eintaegige Busreise dorthin unternommen, es war toll, auch mit dem Wetter hatten wir Glueck! Es war der sonnigste und waermste Tag im ganzen Monat Juni!

Die Bodenseeinsel Reichenau im Untersee (Teil des Bodensees) wurde erst im Jahr 1838 durch einen Damm mit dem Festland direkt verbunden. Lange Zeit lebten die Reichenauer Bauern hauptsächlich vom Weinanbau. Mittlerweile stellte der Obst- und Gemüseanbau an erster Stelle. Die Genossenschaftsbauern der Insel liefern Frischgemüse nach ganz Süddeutschland Daneben bietet der Fremdenverkehr einigen Inselbewohnern ein zusätzliches Einkommen.

Die Schwabenmetropole Ulm an der Donau. Als Nicht- Schwabe muss man sich erst dran gewoehnen, besonders an die Sprache! Wie heisst es so schoen im Volksmund:

Mir Schwobe kennet alles, nur koi Hochdeutsch!

Nach einer Zeit der Eingewoehnung kann man sich aber hier durchaus heimisch fuehlen.

Im vergangenen Jahr waren Rima und Ioannis aus Miami Beach hier bei uns zu Besuch, bei Rima hat's alte Heimatgefuehle geweckt, ihr Freund Ioannis aus Kuba hat es ebenfalls sehr genossen und will wiederkommen, vielleicht schon im kommenden Sommer - die Alten wuerden sich freuen!

It was an enjoyable party with lots of food, some beer and mixed drinks, and great guitar playing by Dick.

Trip to Sierra Madre and Copper Canyon

We were on a tour organized by CARAVAN, an American tourist organization we have already done 2 other trips with and liked the way they handle it.
Our mode of travel from the point of departure was bus from El Paso, Texas, to Creel, and by train from Creel to El Fuerte and back to Chihuahua , from Chihuahua back to El Paso again by bus. Everything was well organized, the hotel accommodations and - in Creel - the cottage, was excellent and the tour director, Manuel, very experienced, a nature lover and history buff (Mexican history).

Here is a 5-minute brief about Mexican history:

Mexico is a North American country and reflects a vibrant blend of Spanish and native cultures and rare natural beauty. Since 1994 it has been a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the US and Canada.

The most prominant cultures - before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores in 1519 (Cortez) - were the Maya and the Aztec. Their legacy is reflected not only in the restored historic monuments which bear witness of a high degree of civilization, but also in the faces of an enthusiastic and optimistic nation.

In 1821 Mexico achieved independence from Spain, and underwent a revolution under the leadership of Francisco "Pancho" Villa. The new constitution drafted at that time was the most advanced in the world, e.g. abolition of slavery, no death penalty, and much more! The constitution is still in effect now.

A little further down I will give you some more details of our trip.
First the train trip with the Chihuahua - Pacifico railway, called CHEPE, CHE for Chihuahua, and P for Pacifico. I took almost all of these pics from the train while travelling.

5K run im Ballard Park

Dieser 5K run fand bei herrlichem Wetter am 6. Dezember 2008 morgens um 9 Uhr statt. Der Ballard Park im Melbourner Stadtteil Eau Gallie liegt landschaftlich wunderschoen am Zufluss des Eau Gallie river in den Indian river - etwa 10 Meilen von unserem Haus weg. Petra war 1. in 32 Minuten, ich ebenfalls 1. aber - in 45 Minuten - allerdings war ich der Einzige in der Altersklasse 70+! Iss mir wurscht, Hauptsache ich komme an! Es gibt eben nicht mehr so viele in meinem Alter, die noch Sport treiben.

First we had to cross the world-famous GOLDEN GATE bridge to travel north thru the main valley to MUIR WOODS.

The SEQUIOA or California Redwood trees are the largest trees in the world! They grow to a height of more than 100 m (300 ft) and up to 8 m (25 ft) in width. They can live more than 2000 years! Our visit there was a unique experience!

This is how they work. A cable car is superficially very similar to a funicular but differs from such a system in that its cars are not permanently attached to the cable and can stop independently, whereas a funicular has cars that are permanently attached to the propulsion cable, which is itself stopped and started. A cable car cannot climb as steep a grade as a funicular, but many more cars can be operated with a single cable, making it more flexible, and allowing a higher capacity. During the rush hour on San Francisco's Market Street Railway, a car would leave the terminal every 15 seconds.

Biathlon Congress in Prag, Czech Republic

From Sep. 2 to Sep. 7 2008 I had an assignment as conference interpreter to the 8th Regular Biathlon Congress in Prag. Petra came along. After a 6-hour train ride from Ulm, via Augsburg, Nuernberg, Pilsen, we arrived in Prag in the early pm. We checked into our Hotel which was conveniently situated about 1/2 hour from the Charles Bridge and downtown. The beauty of that city is overwhelming! No destruction during WW2! A true World Heritage in so may ways! I'll try my best to give you an impression by including a good number of photos in my BLOG. Enjoy it - and - comments are welcome!

Bad Windsheim

Reise mit Raedern auf dem Auto vom 10. - 13. August 2008 Nach Bad Windsheim in Mittelfranken in der Naehe von Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Zunaechst einige fotografische Eindrueck von Bad Windsheim.

Die Mama beim Espresso in einem Bad Windsheimer Cafe am Markt. Der Alte muss natuerlich alle Bilder machen, deshalb ist meist "nur" die Mama auf den Fotos festgehalten - Schoenheit geht vor Alter!

Und dann ging es gleich weiter auf dem Aisch Radweg von Bad Windsheim nach Neustadt and der Aisch und zurueck.

Das Flusstal ist ein idealer Nist- und Fressplatz fuer Stoerche.

Nach der Rueckkehr verbringen wir bei einem Bier einige Zeit im Biergarten am Freilichtmuseum - mit Blick auf dieses beeindruckende Fachwerkhaus.

Und nun zum zweiten Tag, unsere Radltour von 70 km entlang der Tauber.

Entlang des Tauberradwegs tauchen ploetzlich ueberall breite Steinmauern an den Haengen auf. Ein alter Mann erklaerte uns, dass diese Mauern schon Jahrhunderte alt sind. Der Boden dort ist sehr steinig, also hat man die Steine auf diese Art aufgeschichtet, um bessere Ernteerfolge dazwischen zu erzielen.

Der weltberuehmte Altar von Creglingen - ein Meisterstueck des mittelalterlichen Holzschnitzers Tilmann Riemenschneider. Er lebte von 1459 bis 1531 und erschuf unzaehlige Kunstwerke, besonders Schnitzereien.

Und das gibt's zu essen...
Balthasar Neumann war ein beruehmter Baumeister des Barock und Rokoko, u.a. hat er die Wuerzburger Residenz gebaut.

Die Mama besteht darauf, allen zu zeigen, dass sie keine Bayerin ist, denn nur die haben bayrische Faehnderln am Radl.

Weikersheim mit Schloss.

Hier in diesem Saal ueber den Torboegen im Schloss Weikersheim habe ich im Jahre 1986 zusammen mit 3 Kollegen mal so richtig geschwitzt, und zwar im Job als Simultandolmetscher bei einer Konferenz mit amerikanischen Wissenschaftlern aus dem damaligen Reagan Umfeld ueber das Thema "Star Wars" - heute kaum noch aktuell!! Das Thema war so geheim, dass wir keinerlei Vorabinformation bekommen konnten.

Die Katze laesst das Mausen nicht! Mama muss zwanghaft Pflaumen pfluecken!

- und sie auch gleich verspeisen.

Hier zum Abschluss ein beruehmtes und wohlschmeckendes fraenkisches Gericht, das man kennen und probieren MUSS, die sogennanten BLAUEN ZIPFEL!

So sollten sie ausschauen:

Hier das Rezept, geht auch mit amerikanischen Schweinswuersteln!

Zutaten fuer den Wurzelsud:

2 Zwiebeln, 2 Moehren, 1 Stueck Sellerie, eine Stange Lauch (gruener Teil), 1 Lorbeerblatt, 2 Gewuerznelken, 15 Pfefferkoerner, 1 l Wasser, 1 Tasse Essig oder 1 Tasse Weisswein+1/2 Tasse Essig, Prise Zucker, Prise Salz.

Zutaten fuer die Blauen Zipfel im Sud:

3 Zwiebeln, 1 Moehre, 1 Stange Lauch (weisser Teil), pro Person 6 Nuernberger Bratwuerste (oder US Schweinswuerstel), frischer, grob geriebener Meerettich bzw. scharfer Meerettich aus der Tube/Glas.

Also folgendes einkaufen:

5 Zwiebel, 3 Moehren, 1 Stueck Sellerie, 1 Stange Lauch, 1 Lorbeerblatt, 2 Gewuerznelken, 15 Pfefferkoerner, Essig, Zucker, Salz, 6 Wuerste pro Person, Meerettich.

Und so wird's gemacht:

Aus den o.a. Zutaten eine Wurzelsud machen. Die geputzten Gemuese in der Fluessigkeit auskochen (etwa 1/2 Stunde), dann die zerkochten, ausgelaugten Gemuesereste mit einem Schaumloeffel aus dem Sud herausnehmen und wegschmeissen. Abschmecken mit Zucker und Salz.

Man hat jetzt eine Fluessigkeit, die man "Wurzelsud" nennt. Das kann man auch am Vortag vorbereiten und wenn's soweit ist aufkochen. Dann die Gemuese fuer die eigentlichen "Blauen Zipfel im Sud", den Essig (Wein) und die Wuerstel hineingeben und etwa 15 min ziehen lassen - NICHT KOCHEN!!! - sonst platzen die Wuerstel, das Gemuese soll garen aber noch etwas Biss haben - "al dente" wie bei Spaghetti!.

Die Wuerstel mit dem Gemuese und etwas Sud in einem Suppenteller anrichten. Mit etwas frischem geriebenen Meerettich und Bauernbrot (hard to come by in the US) servieren. Voila! Guten Appetit.

Uebrigens, der Name blaue Zipfel beruht auf der Tatsache, dass die Wuerstel in dem Wein/Essig Sud etwas blaeuliche Farbe annehmen.

Das war's vom Badesee. Am 5. August zieht der Besuch weiter ins Ferienlager nach Balingen vor der Schwaebischen Alb.

Sendener 4-Seen Schwimmen

Am 28. Juli fand an den Sendener Badeseen zum 4. Mal das 4-Seenschwimmen statt. 124 Schwimmer waren angetreten, obwohl es am Abend zuvor ein starkes Gewitter gegeben hatte. Deta nahm zum 3. Mal Teil - alle Achtung. Sie war die aelteste Teilnehmerin, kam in einer Zeit von 52 Minuten als etwa 80. ins Ziel und bekam einen Pokal sowie einen Gutschein fuer die Hallenbadbenutzung in der naechsten Saison (April - Oktober 2009) im Wert von 75 EURO.

Busfahrt nach Oberschwaben

Auf der schwaebchen Eisenbahne......

Der erste Stop mit dem Bus war das oberschwaebische Museumsdorf Kuernbach - sehr sehenswert und interessant! Es wurde vor etwa 30 Jahren aufgebaut, mit Haeusern, die echt an anderer Stelle gestanden hatten!

Hier ein reetgedecktes Haus - einfach toll anzuschauen, auch von innen.

Einmalig schoenes oberschwaebische Fachwerk, die Haeuser sind alle mehrere hundert Jahre alt!

Ein weiteres Beispiel fuer ein solches Haus. Innen waren Feuerstellen fuer den Herd und als Heizung, der Rauchabzug erfolgte durch ein Loch in der Decke zum darueberliegenden Geschoss. Dadurch wurde das Holz der Dachkonstruktion gedichtet, die Ratten vertrieben und das Reet sozusagen isoliert (insulated). Die Dachsparren waren somit ganz schwarz.

Danach Weiterfahrt nach Warthausen, der Bahnhof beherbergt das bekannte "Knopfmuseum", mit Knoepfen (unglaublich!) aus vielen Jahrhunderten, sogar 2 Jahrtausenden, und der Anfangsstation der "Oechslebahn" nach Ochsenhausen, einer echten schwaebischen Traditionseisenbahn.

Hier ist eine aus Knoepchen hergestellte "Stars and Stripes" Flagge.

Die "Oechsle" Bahn ist eine Schmalspur Bahn wie sie vor 50 Jahren eingefuehrt waren, und verkehrt als Privatbahn im Sommer zwischen Warthausen und Ochsenhausen auf einer Strecke von 19 km, dazu braucht sie etwa 70 Minuten. Ein einmaliges Erlebnis.Das Baehnle blockiert immer die Strasse, ein Schaffner muss mit dem Faehnchen den Verkehr aufhalten.

Lutz was here for about a week with his two sons Milo and Watson. Fortunately the weather was great most of the time and our grandsons enjoyed the beautiful beaches and were not scared a bit by the 5-foot waves. Here are some pictures:

Boat trip on Turkey Creek

On Monday, Feb. 11, a beautiful sunny day here in Florida, we were invited by friends to join them on a boat trip through partially pristine river country.

I took quite a few pictures and I hope that you like the many river scenes and perhaps visit here and enjoy the often hidden beauties of Brevard county, Florida.

Our guide and boat owner, a former US Navy officer with a WWII employment in the Pacific, was a brilliant captain and provided us with details about nature and water that we had hitherto not known.

Tiger Dash 5k race

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Petra and I participated in a 5k race in Wickham Park, Melbourne, Fl.

About 500 runners participated in the races, a 1-mile, a 10k and a 5k, which was the one we ran.

The age groups were from 3 and 1/2 (1-mile kiddy run) to 80+, Petra is in the 65 - 69 age group and I in 70 - 74, that's where the old geezers vainly battle senility.

We have in the past already participated in numerous races, about 15 here in Florida, and it has always been lots of fun, least the race proper, but all the activities around it - the signing up with Running Zone (responsible time-taking and the exact distances), the get-together with the competitors, the award ceremonies, and much more.

The "kiddy races" remind us of the numerous folksmarches, bicycle tours, and camping outings with our kids some 30 years ago.

Petra won the second place in her age group, she could not beat Mrs. Moulinar, maybe next time.

I also came in 2nd, but there was only a total of 3 runners in my age bracket, so when I am 83 I will be in first place ALL the time!

Our next race will be in 2 weeks, on Feb. 21.

Shuttle Atlantis launch

On Feb. 7 we drove to Titusville, Fl., across the Indian River from the Kennedy Space Center to watch the launch of Shuttle Atlantis with European Space Agency module Columbus to be delivered to the ISS. Although we had watched Shuttle launches from our backyard in Palm Bay, about 35 miles south of KSC several times, we had never witnessed it from so close up. It was a unique experience!

Thousands of people from as far as Minnesota the Indian river shores, with cameras trained on the launch pad about 10 miles away, were watching the launch in awe.

Up and away - awesome!

PERU 2007/2008

Hello y'all from Machu Picchu, the forgotten city built by the Inkas more than 500 years ago.

Greetings from Mom and Dad, Opa und Oma, Petra and Hermann.

Our trip to Peru was a great success. We enjoyed every minute of it, although the altitude of up to 11,500 " (almost 4000 meters) sometimes had us breathing hard!

Here are some pictures:

First I chose to portray different types of the people of this Andean country.

They are mostly "Mochitos", meaning a mix of Spaniards and the indigenous Indian inhabitants called Amerindians.
They are poor, but friendly and not pushy at all.

They mainly live on tourism, although the country is very rich in minerals and agricultural products, e.g. they have 1,500 different types of potatoes, called "papas".

Children in a shanty town. They grow up without TV and other amenities we are used to. But... they are happy, or at least seemed to be.

Now here are some pictures of our trips to the different Inka settlements and fortresses. Some of them were never found by the Spanish Conquistadores.

First the ancient upper city of Pisac. The ruins of this city are situated in a spectacular location atop a buttress ridge, with gorges on either side.

We are above the clouds and the views are breathtaking.

These fascinating structures were built by the the Incas at the top of the mountains 700 years ago. This settlement is called PISAC.

We enjoyed it in spite of the rain!

Tis the rocky sand road leading from the Urubamba river (sacred valley) to the ancient city of Machu Picchu.

The "lost city" of the Incas. discovered by Mr. Bingham, the American explorer and adventurer in 1911.

Only the roofs of the houses have disappeared.

They built terraces all the way to the montain top and grew tomatoes, potatoes and corn (maize).

These are remnants of the old Inca capital of Cusco, completely destroyed by Pizarro, unlike Mach Picchu, which the Spaniards didn't find.

Petra is not a remnant!

That's the colonial city of Cusco, viewed from the top of the hill at 12.000 feet.

The Spanish built a 12 meter Jesus statue on top of the rubbles.

They used the Inca stones for building churches.

Here are some more pics from different angles of the "lost city" of Machu Picchu. This was really the most awesome and least destroyed settlement of them all.

Our Peruvian guide Al was very knowledgable, but his English required some getting used to.

Papas (potatoes), there are more than 1000 species, the originate from Peru. The Amerindians lived main on potatoes, corn, all kinds of fruits, beans and Llama meat, and fish. The Pacific ocean offered great varieties. They also raised guinea pigs (Meerschweinchen) for food. They still do.

We donated a number of bags filled with produce for their next days' meals. They were very happy and thankful. Back home I will tell you about the history and develeopment of these settlements.

Christmas 2007

As has been the case for many years, we had the tradional fondue dinner last night. Quality steak meat, chicken, bison meat balls, shrimp and coquille St. Jacque cooked in oil and stabbed from the pot with longish forks - delicious - quaffed with white or red California wine. Rima and her friend Ioannis loved it!

Now we are getting ready for our Peru trip.
